08/13/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Boston Red Sox have been one of baseball's best teams at home this season, while Jon Lester has been nearly unbeatable when he has taken the Fenway Park mound.
Lester tries to pitch the Red Sox to a second straight victory over the Texas Rangers when the two teams continue a three-game series this evening.
The 24-year-old Lester boasts a 6-1 record and a 2.87 earned run average in his 12 Fenway starts this year. That lone blemish came in his 2008 home debut back on April 9, when the young lefty surrendered four runs in 5 1/3 innings to the Detroit Tigers.
Lester's been quite good on the road as well, as his 10-4 overall record and 3.23 ERA will attest. He had not lost in 11 consecutive starts, posting seven wins over that span, until being hung with a defeat in Friday's matchup with the Chicago White Sox.
In that game, Lester was touched for four runs over seven innings as Boston fell to Chicago by a 5-3 count at U.S. Cellular Field.
Lester opposed the Rangers in Boston on April 19 and came away with a no- decision after allowing three runs and 10 hits through 6 1/3 innings. He also did not factor in the final outcome of a June 10, 2006 clash with Texas, which happened to be Lester's major league debut.
The Red Sox survived a slugfest in Tuesday's opener of this series, with Kevin Youkilis belting a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Boston to a wild 19-17 victory.
Youkilis added a two-run shot earlier in the contest for Boston, which racked up 10 runs in the first inning but squandered that big lead before rallying late. David Ortiz had a pair of three-run homers to highlight the Sox' opening-frame eruption.
Dustin Pedroia finished 5-for-6 with five runs scored and two RBI to help Boston record its eighth win in its last 11 games.
Marlon Byrd had a five-hit night of his own for Texas, which fell for the fifth time in its six most recent outings. Ian Kinsler slugged a three-run homer and ended with four RBI in the loss, while Chris Davis also knocked in four runs for the Rangers. Byrd and Frank Catalanotto each had three RBI.
The combined 36 runs tied the single-game American League record set on June 29, 1950 in Boston's 22-14 win over the Philadelphia Athletics.
The Red Sox placed starting pitcher Tim Wakefield on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's tilt and made a move to replace the knuckleballer in the rotation. The club acquired veteran Paul Byrd from Cleveland for either a player to be named later or cash considerations.
After seeing starter Scott Feldman give up a whopping 12 runs (6 earned) in just 2 2/3 innings on Tuesday, the Rangers are counting on a longer and more effective effort from Luis Mendoza tonight. They didn't get one from the rookie his last time out, though, as Mendoza was rocked for five runs in only three frames during a loss at Baltimore last Friday.
The 24-year-old was also shelled by the Red Sox at Fenway Park on April 18, yielding seven runs over three innings in an 11-3 Texas loss. Mendoza is just 1-3 with an 8.46 ERA in seven road appearances (5 starts) this season.
The Rangers will be trying to end a string of six straight defeats at Fenway Park tonight. The Red Sox swept a four-game set from Texas at home from April 18-21.
Boston has also won 11 of the last 13 overall meetings between these teams.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year
Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.
With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.
Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.
Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
