08/23/2008 - Charlotte, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams each had 100-yard rushing games and a touchdown as the Carolina Panthers rushing attack took center stage in a 47-3 thrashing of the Washington Redskins in each team's third preseason tuneup.
Jake Delhomme finished 11-of-19 for 159 yards, two touchdowns and a pick while Steve Smith had two touchdowns on four receptions for 60 yards, including an eight-yard scoring dash after picking up an offensive fumble for the Panthers (2-1).
John Kasay was 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, including a 52-yarder, on his way to accounting for 17 of Carolina's 47 points and the defense played a part in Washington's horrendous offensive output with five sacks.
Jason Campbell was 6-of-10 for 39 yards in a lackluster effort while Todd Collins came on to go 9-of-15 for 79 yards. Colt Brennan was tasked with running the offense to finish out the game and went 6-of-12 for 53 yards. Clinton Portis gained 32 yards on eight carries for Washington (3-1).
Adding to the misery of an embarrassing loss, defensive end Jason Taylor left the game with a sprained right knee. Taylor got his leg caught in a pile of players during a second quarter tackle and remained down on the field after the play in obvious pain.
After both offenses sputtered from the start, Kasay opened the scoring with a pair of field goals from 29 and 28 yards out, the second coming just seven seconds into the second quarter.
The Panthers then kicked it into high gear with Delhomme leading the first- team offense to touchdown drives on each of their four second-quarter possessions.
Smith chipped in with an unlikely touchdown when he picked up a Williams fumble at the Washington eight-yard line and ran it in.
It wasn't all Delhomme as Stewart and Williams burned the Redskins run defense for 50 and 60-yard touchdown runs respectively.
Delhomme hooked up with Dante Rosario for a score from 24 yards on the final possession of the first half and the rout was on as Carolina owned a commanding 34-0 advantage at halftime.
Meanwhile, Washington's first-team offense netted just 51 yards on eight first-half drives.
The Redskins opened the second half with an equally putrid effort, going three-and-out and the Panthers took the ball 50 yards for their fifth straight touchdown as Delhomme and Smith hooked up on a 33-yard score a bit over five minutes into the third.
Washington mercifully got on the board in the third with a 38-yard field goal from Shaun Suisham, as backup Collins led the 'Skins on a 60-yard drive, eclipsing the team's net-yard total for the game with the effort.
A pair of Kasay field goals from 52 and 29 yards in the final stanza made it a 47-3 game.
